When Lot woke up to people screaming and beating on his heart’s door, he was jolted back into reality, and it took him only a split second to realize this wasn’t a dream. Two angels had reach over to try steering the family car back onto the road, but it was too late to determine the inevitable crash that lie ahead.
Lot was shaken. The glorious angel’s presence among he and his family might save them from inevitable destruction.
“Watch out!” the angels yelled as they once again grabbed the wheel, the family vehicle swinging from one side of Destruction Superhighway to the other. The rapid thumping of the road deflectors under the tires was soon replaced by the sound of guardrails scraping down the side of their family vehicle. Lot flinched as a road sign was about to take the rear view mirror off, forbidding them upon escape to ever look back.
From the moment the angels seized the wheel from Lot’s future, Lot, in shock, turned to his wife and two daughters pale with the shock of inevitable destruction upon their faces, intense fear concerning hell-fire and brimstone raining down upon the city.
Lot’s eyes darted up to the rearview mirror to see the sin-filled eyes of his daughters. He could also hear the faint laughter of his son’s-in-law that persuaded him this was but the next Hollywood film being shown at the theatre in Vanity Fair.
Reality began settling into Lot’s mind: he had fallen asleep at the wheel. He knew that he was the reason why his family was about to die. But he also knew that the cause of their current crisis was the key to their potential rescue- HIMSELF.
Lot stood on the breaks, the car lurching ever so closer to judgment. Burning out the tires, he screeched to a halt within inches of the guardrail overlooking the Valley of Gehenna. The car stops…the angels beckon…”Get out of the car….get out of this city…and don’t look back! Ever!!!”
Lot escapes with wife and daughters in tow. Sadly, in love with that city, his wife turns back and views the carnage of Vanity Fair. His daughters take the spirit of the city within their hearts outside the city gates.
Lot and his two daughters were spared, his two sons-in-law burning: his wife a pillar of salt.
Yet today God’s Word provides us with stern and eternal warning, “When it comes to your family, DON’T FALL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL.”
In this dream world, men often feel permission to be irresponsible, immature and unspiritual in their roles as husbands and fathers. In the meantime, they have placed their families in moral and spiritual danger, threatening their marriages, children and faith. They don’t realize that they can’t have it both ways.
Sadly, too many men waste their lives. Many men can tell you what they’re doing this weekend, but they have no clue about their purpose in life or in eternity.
But we don’t have to keep living this way- we can be inspired by the fact that great things happen when men wake up and step up.
The Bible says, “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:14-16)
