“I left the novelty shop and got back into the antique shop. We don’t need something new today, so much that we need something that would seem new if anybody tried it. Now after this meeting I know someone will say that he didn’t teach us anything new, and you are probably right, and the next time you hear me you won’t hear anything new either.
The sun is old-fashioned, and yet without it we would grope in darkness. Air is pretty old-fashioned, and yet without it we would gasp and die. Water is old-fashioned; without it we go mad.
Don’t get too excited that we’ve split the atom and gone all the way to the moon; sin is as black as ever…Hell is as black as ever…eternity is as long as ever…salvation is as free as ever, and nothing important has changed.
We need to make it contemporary and live and preach as though Jesus died yesterday, rose this morning and is coming back tonight.”
