Add to Your Faith…a Good Name

The Bible says in Proverbs 22:1, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”

Nothing has so shaped our society over the past few years more than the actions of people of low character and little integrity. Whether it is a corrupt politician, a greedy and self-interested businessman, a professional athlete or the teacher at the local high school, disappointment can be found everywhere. Sadly, this has led to a distrust of all authority figures, including those of “religious” authority.

The evidence is seen in the youths of this generation. They can be seen on a daily basis living out the poor examples that bombard them daily. This is not due to a lack of people with name recognition; it is due to a lack of moral leaders and unashamed voices crying out the truth in this wilderness void of virtue. Vance Havner used to say, “Young people are dying from a lack of authentic heroes. All they have now are celebrities.”

What can we as Christians do? The Bible has the answer found in Second Peter chapter one verses five through seven: “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.” Those of us who have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ by faith as our Savior have faith, but the Scripture says, “Add to your faith virtue.” God defines virtue as “moral excellence.”

Are we adding moral excellence to our faith? Do we live out the principles so clearly set forth in God’s Word? Are we doing what is right in the dark, willing to have all of our exploits examined in the light?

Just maybe the days of buying cars and loaning money on a handshake are gone. Maybe some of us who dream of the good ole’ days, that may not have been just so good, need to quiet ourselves and consider where we are. However, what I do know is that if the Christian bedrock of our nation does not once again rise up and take a stand for Christ and the truth, we will find ourselves living out the words of Judges 2:10: “And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.”
