Stand Fast….Together

Jim Eliot and His Missionary Colleagues in Ecuador

The Apostle Paul said in Ephesians chapter six and verse thirteen, Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Standing for Christ and His truth is the essence of being a Christian.  From the life of many of God’s servants we see times in their lives when it was easy to stand and other times in which they found it most difficult.  Peter wilted by the fire in Matthew 26 and yet was emboldened by the fire in Acts chapter two.

There may, however, be a secret in our standing.  The following story may illustrate the point:

Last week our family traveled to Ft. Myers, Florida, to spend Thanksgiving with my wife’s family.  At one of the large family get-togethers, someone on the porch asked me to sing.  Now, for me, I’ve sung before large crowds and have overcome the fear easily over time, but the fear of singing before a few people in a little room is enough to make me quiver!  So, I did all I could to ignore the request and change the subject…but the subject kept coming up!

We were about to leave and my wife informed me that I had been asked again, except this time, it was in a larger room with more people.  I said, “I’ll sing if Scotty (married to my wife’s cousin) will sing with me.”  I fetched Scotty, went into the room and we starting singing together.  We sang….and then another…and then another….and then another!   By the end of it, we were taking requests.

You see, in that situation where I had difficulty standing alone, I found someone who would stand with me.  As a matter of fact, on the last song he was asked to hush so I could sing alone, and I did so.

There are times in life when God asks us to stand alone, but there are other times when we could be aided by the faithful, uncompromising stand of others.  There be many times when the Devil attempts to make us think that we are all alone, but like Elijah the Holy Spirit reminds us that the Lord has thousands who have not bowed the knee to Baal.  We are not alone!
