In Matthew chapter 27 we see an assembly of people there at Golgotha. Some are sitting (36), and some are passing by (39). They came to watch the lamb, but the goings-on of this day were unrivaled from any other crucifixion ever known to the Roman Empire. Criminals were led their and received the due reward of their crimes. The guilty died and their dead carcases were no doubt a deterrent to crime within Rome. But today was different. Today saw the innocent die. Today saw one who “claimed to be God” dying. Today saw such miraculous happenings (54) that spoke at day’s end of the deity of this one, the Lord Jesus Christ.
For the first three hours of Christ’s time here at Calvary the hill is a flurry of activity…but the wheels of motion came suddenly to a standstill. From noon to 3 pm there was pitch black darkness over all the land…it was not an eclipse. It was a divine control over nature…At midday it was as midnight…
God kept the lights on for the physical sufferings of death. Christ stood in Pilate’s hall and was scourged, beaten, as His beard was plucked out, a crown of thorns was placed deep into His skull. The light of day made for mental images emblazened deep into the memories of those Jews who cried, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”
But when it came time for the sin-debt of all the world to be laid upon Christ’s shoulders the privacy of darkness was given. During the most excruciating sufferings, the darkness shut Him off from all witnesses. He was doing business with the righteous demands of a holy God.
But what about those who came here to witness what was to them just another crucifixion? They had seen this before but this one was different. Sometime after three o’clock Jesus gave up the ghost and the lights came back on…they walked home….they walked home after dark, except it is now no longer dark…it is light...for there is something in all of this… something is new….things will never be the same…
I SUBMIT TO YOU THAT EVERY MORNING HEREAFTER WHEN YOU SEE THE RISING OF THE SUN YOU SHALL REMEMBER THAT THINGS CHANGED WHEN THIS GROUP OF JEWS WALKED HOME AFTER DARK.Thank God, hallelujah, things for lost mankind were drastically altered.
- When the light returned, God was done dealing with sin. Jesus cried out at the end of the darkness in John 19:30, It is finished. The work of paying for man’s sins was done. Although man dwelt in darkness and sin created more darkness, Jesus cured the darkness!
- When the light returned, God had provided a way back to Him. Matthew 27:51 records that when Jesus died, the vail in the temple was split from top to bottom. That meant that all men could approach unto God, not needing the aid of the priest.
- When the light returned, God would never again turn His back on His son or the believing sinner. Jesus cried out, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? Jesus, His only begotten Son, felt the unbending justice of a Holy God, but because God treated His only Son that way, it ensured all men that no one trusting in Jesus would ever again feel the cold shoulder of their Heavenly Father! We are secure and complete in Him!
Let us never forget that our sins have been forgiven by the blood of Christ and we have fellowship with God. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ God’s son cleanseth us from all sin!
